Spaghetti Bolognese

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

My 3 growing teenage boys are eating so much! With meat being more expensive these days, I try to find any way to make it stretch. One of my family's favorite dinners is Spaghetti Bolognese. They could probably eat this every single night if they could. I have one secret for how I double this recipe...it is by using mushrooms with the ground beef! By dicing the mushrooms up finely, nobody even knows that they are in the sauce! It is a win-win for all!! I am saving money by using less ground beef and we are getting another serving of vegetables to our dinner. This is the perfect recipe for your Sunday night family meal together!

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef

1 small onion, diced

1 8 oz. package of mushrooms, finely diced

3 cloves of garlic, minced

6 oz. can tomato paste

14.5 oz. can diced tomatoes

28 oz. can crushed tomatoes

1/2 to 3/4 cup water, depending of how thick you like your sauce

1 tbsp sugar

1 1/2 to 2 tsp salt

1 1/2 tsp pepper

1 tbsp dried basil

1 tbsp dried oregano

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet at medium-high heat.

  2. When it is almost completely browned, add the mushrooms and onion and stir until they have softened.

  3. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

  4. Add the tomato paste and stir until it is mixed in good with the ground beef mixture.

  5. Turn the heat down to medium-low and add the diced tomatoes and crushed tomatoes. Stir.

  6. Add the sugar, salt, pepper, basil and oregano and give it a good stir.

  7. Simmer on low until you are ready to boil some pasta for dinner. If you have fresh basil, add some at the very end for a fresh taste!

Serve over your favorite pasta and top with fresh Parmesan. Don't forget the garlic bread! It is perfect for scooping up this delicious sauce!

By adding diced mushrooms to your ground beef in this recipe, you will get multiple meals out of this sauce! It makes a ton! Please note that it freezes great - which is perfect for the nights where you don't feel like cooking!
